ARTIST’S STATEMENT:

I’ve struggled to own the word “artist.” From a young age, I know I saw the world uniquely. But, doesn’t everyone see— uniquely? Never will there be another person exactly like you…or me. I believe this wholeheartedly. What I realized as a photographer early in my career was that I wasn’t the most talented. I certainly didn’t have as much technical training as some. Yet, I was successful because I had “the eye.” Now that I hire photographers to help me, I understand that I can teach people about shutter speed and white balance, but I’m not so sure I can teach people how to see. Much magic exists beyond what I cannot see.

Film was a medium I loved during a chaotic childhood, and in 2015, on the brink of an adult breakdown, I bid on this Contax 645 on Ebay. I cried when I won because it was an impulsive purchase I couldn’t afford. I call her Connie. I now own two of her. She’s taught me to pay attention again. She’s so heavy that she literally grounds me like a weighted blanket I wear around my neck. I’ve spent the past several years shooting at least a few rolls of film each week. There’s a presence and flow required to create art. Film offers me an immersion into the present moment and a journey into the art that dwells within each and every thing.

Around my office, I have framed photos from my travels. I find the images help resource people who come in to integrate their trauma. For years, people have expressed a desire to purchase my work. I’ve curated a collection of limited edition prints for the public.
